“Tulu”, the African Natural Cream for the Skins that Never Wrinkles…
Shea butter is extracted from the nuts of the Shea tree, which grows in the savannah of Western Africa. The English name Shea comes from its Bambara name “sii”, which means sacred. As a sacred tree, it is treated with particular respect. Growing up to 60 feet tall, the Shea tree does not flower before it is 20 years old and can live up to 200 years, it is the ”longevity tree” that gives the “longevity remedy”. Shea Butter is a traditional gift for newborns, a sign of happiness. In the hot Savannah, Shea butter protects the skin from the sun and dehydration. For millennia, people have used it to protect their skin from the drying winds and sun as well as to heal many skin problems, minor cuts and burns. The Shea nuts are traditionally harvested by women.
Collect of the Fruits:
During the months of August and September, early morning at 4am, when the temperatures are still cooler the ladies walk to the forest to pick-up the fruits on the floor. A hard season for them, lots of hours of work each day combining working in the fields (a daily task) and harvest the nuts. The Shea nuts are crushed and boiled to extract the Shea butter.
“We import the Shea butter directly from a village situated around 70kms away from Bamako in Mali. We work with a local family and with a woman cooperative. Pure raw Shea butter has a distinctive smell so we also have another version mixed with essential oil. Enjoy the bliss… use it daily on psoriasis, rash, insect bites, burns, minor cuts, wrinkles, lips, hair, wrinkles, scars…”
